Anatomical embroidery: median nerve

Description

This anatomical embroidery of the median nerve is part of my range of larger anatomical hand embroideries. It’s perfect for a lover of human anatomy as well as for anyone with a specialism.

On this nine inch hoop I’ve used false colour to create a piece that is as decorative as it is informative. I work from a range of medical books and dissection manuals to get the details spot on. If I get the chance, I’ll also dissect the organ itself (thanks to Ferris Mewler, my cat, who brings in her kill, and specialist online services). This means I can study the texture of the organs on which I’m working to try to replicate them in the stitching. My hoops are worked with a mix of satin stitches, couching and French knots on calico, depending on the organs I am interpreting, and the backs of the hoops are hand stitched into place with felt. Each hoop takes several weeks to create and it’s a process that begins with basic colours upon which I build up the shading and other details. It’s extremely detailed work, where I often work single-stranded stitches just millimeters long but I hope you agree that it’s worth the effort.

I take commissions, of course, so am open to all sorts of suggestions (keep ’em clean). You aren’t restricted to an anatomical embroidery of the median nerve. In fact, several of the images you see on this site including this one were suggested (and bought) by medics. If you are interested in a particular aspect of the human anatomy I’m happy to chat about what I can do and come up with a range of hoop ideas to suit every pocket. You can also read about what goes into each anatomical embroidery

Just contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions or requests and I’ll do my very best to help!
